VERTIGO THEATRE partners with Arts Leadership Training Program

Providing Opportunities for BIPOC Arts Administrators

Three organizations are partnering together to create training opportunities.

Calgary, AB – Residing on Treaty 7 Territory and the Métis Nation of Alberta (Districts 5 and 6). Vertigo Theatre is joining The Centre of Socially Engaged Theatre (University of Regina) and the Belfry Theatre (Victoria, BC) as co-coordinators for the fifth phase of the Arts Leadership Training Program to create training opportunities for emerging arts administrators.

“The Arts Leadership Training Program is integral to the health of the sector, and Vertigo Theatre is thrilled to be partnering with the Belfry and C-SET to facilitate this national program,” said Breanne Harmon, Executive Director of Vertigo Theatre. “The program fills a sectoral gap and aims to create access, remove barriers, and train the next generation of artistic and administrative leaders, while allowing the institutions that participate to learn and grow.”

Partnering with performing and visual arts groups and educational institutions in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Ontario for Phase 5 of this program, The Arts Leadership Training Program is designed to provide access and training for artists and arts administrators who identify as Indigenous, Black and/or People of Colour (BIPOC).

Taiwo Afolabi, the Canada Research Chair in Socially Engaged Theatre, the Director of the Centre for Socially Engaged Theatre and co-creator of this initiative says “as an artist of African descent, I find this partnership genuine, meaningful and timely. The senior management of partnering organizations have come to the table to ask difficult questions about the current state of the art. They are hoping to develop a path towards an arts and culture sector that is deliberately inclusive.”

The Program will be designed collaboratively, assembling the program components based on the stated interests of those participating, with a focus on administrative practices. For this cohort, we will be accepting five participants. The Program will launch in September 2026.
