BD&P Mystery Theatre Series

It boggles my mind that I have been with Vertigo for only a year and a half and yet I have programmed three seasons of work.  In my short time with the company I have read hundreds of plays, met and collaborated with hundreds of artists and signed hundreds of opening night cards. I have also spoken with hundreds of patrons who have shared, with great passion, their kudos and critiques.  The lineup for the 2014/2015 BD&P Mystery Theatre Series feels like a distillation of all of this; a perfect marriage of Vertigo’s past and future.  We start with a new vision of a noir classic.  Aaron Bushkowsky’s excellent adaptation of Raymond Chandler’s Farewell, My Lovely was originally commissioned by Vancouver’s Arts Club Theatre and we are partnering with them on the world premiere of this new Canadian play.  We follow Chandler’s most acclaimed work with an Edgar Award winning comedy by one of the most  accomplished American writers working in the mystery genre.  I have been describing Ken Ludwig’s The Game’s Afoot as Arthur Conan Doyle meets Agatha Christie with a little Noel Coward thrown in for good measure.  It is a smart comedic romp that is perfect for the holiday season. In January it is our pleasure to present the North American premier of Douglas Post’s Bloodshot.  This play from the UK’s SAS Productions has been wowing audiences on London’s West End and features a tour de force performance by renowned British stage actor Simon Slater. Next up we take a spooky trip back to 1865 with Hugh Janes’ The Haunting.  The Haunting introduces us to another side of the work of Charles Dickens and will have us jumping out of our seats at the same time.  We wrap up the season with an old audience favorite.  It has been twelve years since Vertigo produced Dial “M” For Murder and with one of Calgary’s most talented young directors at the helm, this is sure to be a stylish new take on a classic thriller.  Speaking of audience favourites, as an added bonus we will cap the 2014/2015 season with the return of the show that every subscriber mentions without fail whenever I ask them about their most memorable Vertigo experiences.  In the years since Vertigo first presented Shear Madness the play has become a worldwide phenomenon. Vertigo will tap some of Calgary’s finest comedic talents for this new production.  The faces will be different but the hilarity will remain.  An open heart and a detective’s brain is all you will need to enjoy the 2014/2015 BD&P Mystery Theatre Series.  We will do the rest!

Y Stage Theatre Series

What does it mean to grow up?  How do we embrace the unknown?  How do we forge into the future with curiosity, courage and hope?
Y Stage’s 2014/2015 season is packed with five Canadian productions that aim to inspire creativity, provoke imagination, and celebrate our ever-changing world.  Witness spectacular puppetry in The Playhouse with shows such as Pinocchio and Stella, Queen of the Snow.  Join Max and his crew of monsters in a charming mask-filled production of Where the Wild Things Are, or forge into our new reality where dreams and technology merge in Dreaming Now.  Our show for teens:  tagged takes a critical look at the power of social media and like all of our productions, is sure to spark plenty of interesting conversation.  It is my mission to seek out the best theatre I can find and bring it to Calgary for you and your family.  I am thrilled with the quality of the work we will be featuring this season and I’m sure you will be too. See you at the theatre!
