TRAVELS WITH MY AUNT
By Graham Greene
Adapted by Giles Havergal
Directed by Simon Mallett
Recommended for ages 14+
"More crime caper than traditional mystery, described by Graham Greene as 'the only book I have written just for the fun of it'. Havergal's brilliant adaptation translates this fun story into a highly theatrical adventure." - Craig Hall, Artistic Director
Henry Pulling leads a quiet life tending his beloved dahlias and never straying too far from his home. But when his eccentric and outrageous Aunt Augusta suddenly appears with mysterious information about his past, Henry is drawn into a life of crime and a series of absurd adventures. Adapted from the celebrated novel by Graham Green, Travels With My Aunt takes you on an irreverent, often hilarious and absolutely unforgettable journey.
"TRAVELS WITH MY AUNT is not a traditional mystery. While the story shares many of the tensions and tropes of a traditional mystery, and while there is definitely a mystery at its core, what Graham Greene has constructed is more of a globetrotting comedic caper. The caper is distinguished from the straight-ahead crime story by elements of humor, adventure and unusual cleverness or audacity, all of which this story has in abundance. The actions of the police and detectives attempting to prevent or solve the crimes are there, but they are not the main focus of the story. Instead the action of a caper centers on the perpetrators, in this case a hapless protagonist who is unwittingly drawn into a life of crime despite his best efforts, and his outrageous (and perhaps morally corrupt) Aunt. As we continue to explore mystery’s various subgenres and attempt to more regularly inject comedy into the series, my hope is that those of you who are drawn to Vertigo by your love of a good mystery will understand this stretch. It is an opportunity to see one of the masters of the thriller indulge in a flight of comedic fancy, and a chance to see four of this city’s finest actors tackle an epic feat of storytelling. As we gear up to announce the lineup for the 2014/2015 BD&P Mystery Theatre Series in April, and to present Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES in May, you can rest assured that there will be plenty of excellent mysteries, old and new, to come. In the meantime I hope you enjoy this playful departure." - Craig Hall, Artistic Director
